چکیده

BACKGROUND Cerebral emboli resulting from atherosclerosis at the carotid bifurcation is a major cause of ischemic stroke. A convenient and prompt evaluation is necessary for secondary prevention and treatment. METHODS In this study, one hundred and thirty eight patients with cerebral ischemic events were enrolled; 100 patients with nonischemic cerebral diseases were enrolled as controls. Noninvasive ultrasound was used to measure the atherosclerotic plaques and intima-media thickness (IMT) of carotid and femoral artery. RESULTS Our results showed that patients in study group had higher incidence and severity of carotid and femoral plaques, and higher mean intima-media thickness (IMT) at both the carotid and femoral sites compared with that of controls (p < 0.01). Carotid atherosclerosis were highly prone to have instability plaques in study group(p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS This cross-sectional study showed that, the prevalence of carotid atherosclerosis and the unstable plaques were higher in cerebral ischemic patients. KEYWORDS Carotid artery; Atherosclerosis; Intima-media thickness; Cerebral ischemic stroke.

Extracranial carotid atherosclerosis in patients with and without transient ischemic attacks and coronary artery disease.

We examined the extent of extracranial carotid atherosclerosis as evaluated by a B-mode ultrasound score in four groups of hospitalized patients: hospital controls free of both cerebrovascular symptoms and coronary atherosclerosis (HC, n = 245); patients with coronary atherosclerosis but without cerebrovascular symptoms (CAD, n = 382); patients with transient ischemic attacks but asymptomatic f...

A journey into the carotid artery microenvironment in high resolution: challenging the stenosis-symptoms paradigm.

Atherosclerosis is the most frequent cause of extracranial cerebrovascular disease, and represents an important cause of stroke and transient ischemic attack, being responsible for up to 15% to 20% of all ischemic strokes (1). Carotid artery stenosis has long been recognized as an important risk factor. In most studies of carotid artery stenosis intervention, clinically important stenosis, beyo...

Polymorphisms of fractalkine receptor CX3CR1 gene in patients with symptomatic and asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis.

AIM The chemokine fractalikine is expressed in vascular endothelium, exerting a pro-atherogenic effect. Two single-nucleotide polymorphisms of the CX3CR1 gene (T280M and V249I) affect frac-talkine receptor expression and function. We aimed to assess the prevalence of CX3CR1 polymor-phisms and the association with ischemic cerebrovascular attacks in a cohort of carotid atheromatous disease patie...

The Impacts of C-Reactive Protein and Atrial Fibrillation on Carotid Atherosclerosis and Ischemic Stroke in Patients with Suspected Ischemic Cerebrovascular Disease: A Single-Center Retrospective Observational Cohort Study

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) is associated with chronic inflammation, and C-reactive protein (CRP) level is elevated in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). We investigated the impacts of CRP and AF on carotid atherosclerosis and ischemic stroke in patients with suspected ischemic cerebrovascular disease. SUBJECTS AND METHODS One-hundred forty patients (78...

Phosphodiesterase 4D gene, ischemic stroke, and asymptomatic carotid atherosclerosis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Phosphodiesterase 4D (PDE4D) was identified recently as the first novel stroke gene to predispose to ischemic stroke independently of conventional risk factors. An association was only found with large vessel and cardioembolic stroke, suggesting a mechanism of accelerated atherosclerosis. We sought to replicate this association in ischemic stroke as a whole, and individua...
